Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson believes India remain the benchmark in white-ball cricket. He says Pakistan’s main challenge is to close the gap and keep improving. The two teams could meet at the Asian Games if both win their quarter-finals.
Hesson is hoping Pakistan’s young squad can show the same fighting spirit they showed against India in last year’s Asia Cup final. Pakistan pushed India hard in that match but could not lift the trophy.
India have dominated recent meetings between the teams. Pakistan lost all three of their matches against India in the last Asia Cup. They have also lost the last six games between the two sides.
Hesson Praises India’s White-Ball Strength
Hesson called India the current benchmark in white-ball cricket. However, he does not want his players to look too far ahead. Pakistan must first win their quarter-final before thinking about a possible meeting with India.
Pakistan are one of four seeded teams at the Asian Games. India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the other seeded sides. Pakistan will begin their campaign on September 28 against the runners-up from Group B.
The tournament will also mark Pakistan’s return to T20I cricket after the T20 World Cup. The team reached the Super Eight stage earlier this year before their campaign ended.
For fans following Diamond Bet 247, the possible India-Pakistan meeting adds another major storyline to the Asian Games competition. However, both teams must first complete their quarter-final assignments.
Pakistan Focus on T20 Progress
Hesson strongly defended Pakistan’s T20 team when questions were raised about the side’s recent form. He pointed to their progress in the format since he took charge.
Pakistan were ranked eighth in T20 cricket when Hesson arrived. He said the team have since moved up to fifth and gained points through a number of series wins.
The coach also highlighted victories at home and in overseas conditions. He believes those results show that Pakistan’s T20 side has made progress over the past 15 months.
At the same time, Hesson admitted that Pakistan’s Test team is struggling. He also said the one-day side is still developing as they prepare for the next World Cup.
Hesson Wants Format-Wise Assessment
Hesson believes Pakistan’s three formats should not be judged together. He accepted that the Test side faces problems, while the ODI team still needs more development.
He also said the T20 side should receive credit for its recent results. Pakistan have won several T20 series and improved their position in the world rankings.
The coach admitted that the team are not yet a finished product. Still, he feels their progress in white-ball cricket should not be ignored.

Mohammad Wasim Returns to the Squad
Pakistan have also made one change to their Asian Games squad. Experienced fast bowler Mohammad Wasim Jnr has replaced Salman Mirza, who is unavailable because of a fracture to his left thumb.
Wasim last played a T20I for Pakistan in January against Sri Lanka in Dambulla. His experience will add depth to a squad that includes four players yet to play a T20I.
Sahibzada Farhan will captain the 15-member squad. Abdul Samad has been named vice-captain, while the squad also includes players such as Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub, Hasan Nawaz and Usman Khan.
